Larkins in America

As you would expect, the Larkin families arrived in America on the east coast, finding homes in New York and Boston. Later gaining in confidence, and becoming aware of the land of opportunity around them, they began to spread westwards. Chicago became an Irish enclave, and still the move westwards continued, until San Francisco had its own little Ireland in the mission district. More that a few also headed south, to dig the Irish channel in New Orleans. This inward migration is well illustrated with the following series of maps. These specifically show the distribution of the Larkin surname across the United States in each decade from 1800 to 1900. The westward movement, as well as the increasing density, is clearly visible.

A mere 30 years later, the Famine influx had begun; and the result is very apparent.

This list of emigrants given below is culled from a number of ships lists, and from the archives of Ellis Island arrivals. It is by no means complete - it represents a start. In time, it may grow to become really useful.
