Galway 1848 - 1855

The survey which became known as Griffith's Primary Valuation took place throughout Ireland during the middle of the 19th Century and the valuation of Galway was published in 1856. This survey was was a summary of land occupation to determine the amount of tax a landowner or tenant should pay towards the support of the Poor Law System.  Between 1848 and 1864, the land of all Ireland was surveyed for the purpose of establishing the level of rates in the form of a local tax to be paid by each landholder or leaseholder.  Briefly, it was essentially a Real Estate survey of Ireland carried out by Griffith and his team for the purpose of assessing taxes to support the indigent under the Poor Laws; out of which arose the Poor Law Unions.  It's main value to researchers springs from the changes and emigration since then, and the fact that most Irish public records were burned in 1922 during the Civil War. They were housed in the Four Courts and that building, which was held by the Republicans was shelled by state forces. Griffiths survey therefore remains the most important source available, for records detailing family holdings in the mid ninteenth century. Not all families are included - those misfortunates "of no property" were not deemed worthy of inclusion; nor were the several levels of sub-tenants who lived on other tenants land holdings. 

The table given below has been sorted according to forename; and unless otherwise stated, the surname in all cases may be taken as LARKIN. The holdings column has been simplified in order to show who held a dwelling-house (Hse), and give a rounded estimate of the acerage of land held.
